Something I was asked last week:

Can I have a shutdown icon on my desktop?
(This was from someone running xubuntu linux).

Right click desktop.
Choose 'Create launcher'

In the name field, type 'Shutdown'
in the Command field, type:

copy

(give it a snazzy icon - type 'shutdown' when searching for an icon in the icon browser dialog, and see if you have a red power icon to use). - Not essential, but looks better on your desktop.

Right-click the new shortcut command you just created called 'Shutdown' and choose 'Permissions' tab. Check the box 'Allow to execute as a program'
